Dr. Roger Soenksen's big personality (and even bigger laugh) has livened up JMU’s classrooms and hallways for five decades. His commitment to defend and advocate for the First Amendment, whether through his classroom teaching or his work with journalists on campus, has inspired thousands of students who have come through the Communications and Media Arts and Design programs.

Your gift to the new Dr. Roger Soenksen First Amendment Scholarship ensures that the values Dr. Soenksen has championed throughout his 49 years at JMU will help future generations of Dukes.

Students eligible to be selected for the Soenksen scholarship must:

• Be a Media Arts and Design major with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Submit an essay addressing the significance of the principles in the First Amendment.
• Demonstrate leadership and mentorship through student media, community outreach, or public service.

Another way to support students is by giving to the SMAD General Fund, which assists faculty and students.
